Packing is always tricky, no matter how long you go away for. There’s so much temptation for you to go overboard and cover every eventuality, even if they’re unlikely to happen. You should always have a winter coat handy when you’re going to the beach, right? Fortunately, if you struggle to keep things to a minimum when you’re off on a short break, these tips should help you pack light.
Restrict your bag size
Usually, one of the best ways to stop yourself from packing too much is by restricting the size of the bag you take. Decide straight away what you’re going to use to carry your luggage and stick with it, no matter what. If you reach capacity before you’ve packed everything, that’s your chance to evaluate what you’re taking, not find a bigger bag. It will take a little willpower on your part, but you’ll be glad of it later on. You don’t want to be dragging around a heavy suitcase on your weekend getaway – trust us.
Wear what you won’t pack
If you have certain items that take up more space than you’d like them to, it’s always a good idea to wear them while traveling. Things like coats or boots can admittedly be a nightmare to pack, and you want to avoid as much stress as possible. Thankfully, by having them on when you’re going to and from your weekend getaway, you can avoid the hassle of trying to fit them in your bag. This frees up more space for other things, although that’s not an excuse to start taking more stuff than you need.
Think a little, not a lot
It might be easier said than done, but the key to packing for a weekend getaway is taking a little, not a lot. You have to seriously think about how many clothes you’ll actually need, rather than taking whatever you fancy. If you want to pack a greater variety of outfits to cover every eventuality, you’ll have to make sacrifices somewhere. Maybe that means having to wear the same pair of shoes all weekend, or not being able to take accessories. That might not sound ideal, but you can’t have it all.
Buy some travel-size toiletries
Toiletries can be a real nuisance when you’re packing for a weekend getaway. You need them when you’re away, but they typically take up far too much space in your bag. That’s why buying them in travel-size is always the way to go. From shampoo and conditioner to toothpaste and deodorant, you can pretty much find whatever you need in miniature form. Not only will these save up plenty of space in your bag, but they’re also the perfect size for when you’re away for just a few days.
Weekend breaks are an excellent chance for you to get away from the pressures at home and relax, but packing for them isn’t half stressful. Thankfully, as long as you accept that sacrifices will have to be made, preparing for your mini vacation should be a walk in the park.
