Without a shred of doubt, we function at our best when we are happy. Not just that “in the moment” kind of happy, but rather an inner joy and inner peace. This kind of inner joy cannot be experienced if we aren’t taking care of the most important person in our lives… ourselves. Yes, being selfless is what true love to our spouses and children is all about, but we have to love ourselves first before we can properly love others. Self-care is a big part of loving ourselves. And while having a day at the spa is a superb way to show some self-care, there are many way more affordable and easier options that can be utilized.
Don’t worry if this hasn’t been done before, there’s never been a better time to start than right now. Start with just 10 minutes a day. Find a quiet place with no distractions (presumably after the kids have gone to bed) and sit quietly for 10 to 15 minutes. Focus on breathing and allow a clear mind to take over. It might feel really silly at first, but the benefits will be realized within a few days.
Exercise is both overrated and underrated at the same time. We aren’t all built to be bouncy gym bunnies with perfectly sculpted figures, but getting some exercise is a great form of self-care. As with everything else in life, start out slowly. Even a simple walk around the block is better than nothing. Get the blood flowing and let the mind clear out by attending a beginner’s yoga class.
Reconnect with nature and find that inner zen again. Take off the shoes and enjoy the coolness of the grass on those tired feet. If it’s possible, pair this one with meditation or yoga to really reap the benefits.
The term “SPA” is a Latin abbreviation for Solus Per Aqua. This literally translates to “Medicating/healing through water.” Taking an extra long shower, lounging around in the bath or hot tub, or even going for a swim are all perfect as long as it’s relaxing. Water is good for our bodies, minds, and souls… so go get wet.
And not on the phone or tablet. Facebook isn’t considered reading. Buy a new magazine with a few interesting articles or pick up a novel. Reading will allow the mind to escape for a bit and is an activity that is just for you alone. Reading before bed is a great way to relax a stressed-out mind and will most definitely aid in better sleep quality.
Break the norm
We are all familiar with the popular saying that “a change is as good as a holiday.” Well, it’s true, isn’t it? Go somewhere and do something that has never been done before or hasn’t been done in a really long time to bring some excitement back. It has been proven that humans hold life experiences in greater regard and remember them far more than any “stuff” we accumulate in life. Haven’t been ice-skating since childhood? Discover that childlike joy again and do something spontaneous.
Don’t ever feel ashamed for wanting to be happy in this life and for doing something just for yourself. It can be very difficult for some people, especially for moms, to put themselves first, even if it’s just for a short while.
